Sugar Gems

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tarter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • colored sugar, green and red

Instructions

  1. In mixing bowl, cream shortening, oil, and sugars.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Beat in vanilla.
  4. Combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tarter, and salt, gradually add to the creamed mixture.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  6. Roll into 1 inch balls, dip tops in colored sugar (I use half the dough with red and the other half with green).
  7. Place sugar side up 2 inches apart on un-greased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees for about 11 minutes or until edges begin to lightly brown.
  9. Remove to wire rack to cool.
